The most expensive home sold in San Diego County!   $25,000,000

Photographs and description of this fabulous residence on the ocean.

"Where the turf meets the surf"

Built in 1937 and never previously on the market for sale.

Incredible secluded gated estate with nearly 6 acres. Dramatically located on Del Mar's Scripps Bluff with the blue Pacific Ocean  on one side and Del Mar racecourse on the other!

Specimen evergreens frame the security gate.

The asphalt driveway is flanked by boxed shrubs.

The formal gardens are extensively landscaped with huge swathes of lawns.

There are numerous bedding plants, oleanders, lilies, hydrangeas and roses. There is also a very pretty separate rose garden.

The separate north lot is also beautifully landscaped,  but in a more natural way with trees, ground cover, lawn, birds of paradise etc plus a vegetable garden.

The ocean is separated from the grounds by neat white picket fencing and a pretty gazebo.

The pool area is enclosed by glass panels and features a cocktail bar plus a cabana with adjoining bath.

The grotto features an open air fireplace - a perfect spot to spend romantic evenings watching and listening to the crashing waves.

The history of Tippett Hall ..

.. a retired newspaperman - Mr. A W Angier, established a fine vineyard and fig orchard  on "Red Cliff" sometime around 1884. He also planted some cypress trees, some of which are still standing.

"Red Cliff" later also became known as "Scripps Bluff" due in part to the benevolence of James Scripps - who donated $250,000 to the City of Del Mar for the purchase of the westerly face of the bluff.

In 1939 Dr & Mrs William Hall Tippett moved into their new colonial mansion they called "Tippett Hall" having bought the bluff side lot  in 1936 - the same year that the Del Mar Racetrack opened.

At the time screen star Douglas Fairbanks owned a large tract immediately to the north.

The way it was -

Mrs. Ruth Tippett filled the house with fine art, antiques, crystal and other fine objects from her travels abroad.

The residence was sold without the furniture.

The picture to the right shows some of the architectural detail found though out the house.

Tippett Hall is quite literally where "The turf meets the surf"
a song made famous by Bing Crosby in 1938.

Del Mar Racetrack and fairgrounds

It was Bing who collect the first ticket from the very first customer to enter the grounds on opening day 1937.

Since then it has become one of the worlds most famous race tracks.
